The Company’s initial success was built largely around human qualities such as trust, respect, integrity, ethical leadership and overall humanitarianism. The Company paid employees above industry norms and, during a period when strikes were commonplace in the printing industry during the 1950’s and 60’s, this fate never befell Smith’s. The Company’s returns on capital employed were always higher than the industry average. Proof that healthy human relationships organically create a high ROI.
